What is Project Cornerstone?
Project Cornerstone is a program in which parent volunteers (ABC Readers) learn to create positive connections with their own children and youth in the community while reading specially selected books and leading activities that help teach valuable life lessons. These volunteers serve as caring adults who help create a positive school climate.
ABC Readers read specially selected books and lead discussions in the classroom that are designed to create a common language and vocabulary about respect and positive behaviors. The stories and activities focus on issues like building friendship skills, increasing student-to-student respect, how to avoid bullies, and what to do if a bully is targeting others. Students also learn about values such as honesty, caring, empathy, responsibility, and friendship.
How can I get involved?
Sign up to be an ABC Reader! Each month, volunteers meet to review the book and lesson plan for the upcoming month. Then, the volunteers read the book and lead the planned activity and discussions in their assigned classroom. All ABC Readers also complete either a Take It Personally or an Assets 101 training course in the beginning to prepare them for volunteering in the classroom.
Sign ups for Project Cornerstone take place at the beginning of the year during the Welcome Back Coffee and Back to School Nights in the classrooms.
