Ruby Bridges Goes To School | Through My Eyes

This is the story of Ruby Bridges, a six-year-old black girl who on November 14, 1960 walked through a mob of screaming segregationists escorted by Federal Marshals into her new school in New Orleans, Louisiana. Surrounded by racial turmoil, Ruby spent first grade learning to read and add with one supportive teacher.

The goals of this lesson:

  • Promote discussion about the importance of tolerance and acceptance of differences.

  • Learn how it feels to walk in someone else’s shoes.

  • Practice techniques to promote a sense of belonging in our school communities by

relying on their personal power as UPstanders to include all students.

  • Role model responsible ways to accept and tolerate differences in the real world and

while online in the digital world.

Please read the parent letter, watch the book narration with your child and have a discussion about this month’s book. We also encourage you to complete the activity to further extend the message and lessons.
